Your essay must be no more than 500 words. The contest is open to anyone ages 6 through 18 who lives in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Washington & Westmoreland Counties. Your essay must be postmarked by March 30, 2012.

Washington NAACP Black History Month Festival

by African Americans to be read aloud.
•Hands-on activities, including a Drumming workshop, Games, and Displays.

on migration, civil rights and sports.
•Genealogy workshop for beginners.
•Voter registration and information.
•Health screenings.

Weekend Program Features
African American Genealogy Day
Visitors can learn about starting their own family genealogy project and join noted genealogist Dr. Deborah Abbott for a workshop presentation discussing African American genealogical research on Sat., Feb. 25 at 1 p.m., at the Thomas & Katherine Detre Library & Archives at the History Center. During her presentation, titled “A Journey of Discovery,” Dr. Abbott will trace the ancestry of an African American family from Ohio and Illinois back to their roots in Kentucky and provide insight on her genealogical methods. Visitors will learn demonstrate the various techniques and resources that help trace ancestors with limited facts and information, particularly ancestors who were enslaved and emancipated.
“A Journey of Discovery” is part of the History Center’s Genealogy Weekend and presented by the Afro-American Historical & Genealogical Society of Pittsburgh and the Heinz History Center. The program is supported by the U.S. Department of Education and is one of the feature programs of the History Center’s upcoming exhibition, From Slavery to Freedom: Pittsburgh and the Underground Railroad, which will open in Nov. 2012. Between a Ballad and a Blues, by playwright Linda Parris-Bailey, explores the life of African American string-band and country blues musician Howard "Louie Bluie" Armstrong, and his experiences during the segregation era, as he performed internationally with Carl Martin and Ted Bogan. The play captures Howard's multi-lingual and musical gifts in a world that may have loved his talent, but not his skin. This free event will include performances by the 6th Regiment USCT Drum Corps, Young Lions African Drummers & Dancers from Sankofa Village of the Arts, and a short film, “For the Love of Liberty”, The Story of America’s Black Patriots. There will also be a Lecture & One Day Exhibit: Incredible Grace, One People, Two Continents, Three Centuries of War, By: John L. Ford, Historian. This lecture and special one day only exhibit addresses wars that Africans and African-Americans fought that gave promise of freedom, liberty and justice for all while they continued to embrace the ideals of equality, even though the fullness of it still remains elusive today. Exhibit will include exclusive primary source documents, pictures, maps and coins.
